Focus on the Fundamentals
Have you ever noticed that the priorities of our education system seem to be a bit off? Our math and social science scores are plummeting. In fact, Alberta's math scores are now among the worst in Canada.
Yet our educational elites are focused on things such as:
- changing the names of schools
- which flags fly when and where
- identity politics
If you look through the minutes of the EPSB meetings, they are littered with these obscure debates. Yet not once was the crisis in math mentioned.
It is not that these debates about details are unimportant, far from it. It is merely that when we do nothing but focus on these secondary problems we end up losing sight of the purpose of our education system: equipping children with the skills they will need later in life.
This is my promise: if I am elected to the Edmonton Public School Board, I will spend more time focusing on the fundamentals of education than on quibbling about the pet projects of special interest groups.
